Semi-Permanent 2008 - Inspiration for this Web and Email Designer
I spend my time at Melon Media generating creative concepts and implementing the chosen designs for email newsletters and websites.
However I need to keep the inspiration flowing and design events allow me to step away from some of the day to day deadlines and indulge in pure creative thought.
One event I always look forward to is Semi-Permanent.
Having just spent 2 days hanging out at Darling Harbour in Sydney attending Semi-Permanent Sydney 2008 I thought I would make some comments on my experience.
Semi-Permanent is a design event like no other.
Speakers range from print design, typography, film, visual effects, fine art, motion design, photography, web design, illustration and 3D animation.
For designers it is a great source of inspiration to see and hear what others in the broad community are working on.
Furthermore regardless of the speaker's speciality it is insightful to hear how speakers interpret a brief, develop an idea and execute the final project.
At Melon I go through this process several times a day for both html email and web projects.
The success of the outcome is just as dependant on my interpretation of the brief as the actual creative result.
But I digress ...
As you’d expect some speakers were more engaging than others and there were the occasional duds.
Some of the stand outs for me this year were Debaser with their awesome album cover designs, Superfad for their conceptual ideas and motion work and Amy Sol for her gorgeous dreamlike paintings.
Spencer Platt was 2008’s stand out speaker, my new all time favourite from the 5 Semi Permanents I’ve attended.
He is a man with a mission to highlight international conflict and tragedy from around the world armed only with his camera.
Highly articulate (don’t think he even had notes) and with an amazing portfolio of photos he had the audience enthralled who inundated him with questions afterwards.
This photo taken after the bombings in Beirut won him World Press Photo of the Year: 2006.
For designers working in the web and email world (as with all designers) we need to draw our inspiration from a wide range of diverse sources.
Semi-Permanent gives us a creative inspiration hit in a convenient 2 day format - highly recommended.

Comments - oldest entries appear first, most recent entries at the end.
I normally try and make it every year.
My stand out over all of them is still Josh Davies of Praystation fame.
Seeing his stuff in flash back then made me trash all my flash work up to that point and start afresh. I find it valuable going to just for the amount of inspiration from the speakers.
Basically it gets you looking at your own work in comparison, and it certainly makes you want to go to the next level with your own creativity and work.
