Have You Experienced Sendphobia?

Posted on Nov 29, 2007

If you are an email marketer who has sent out a campaign to a sizable database, then you are a likely candidate who has suffered what I like to call ‘Sendphobia’.

Sendphobia is that feeling that you get just before you hit the send button on a large (or sometimes small!) campaign. That deep feeling of fear and anxiety. The little flutter in your belly that makes you squirm in your seat. The beads of sweat that form on your brow.

Don't feel embarrassed if you have experienced this before, we've all been there. In fact no matter how experienced you are with managing campaigns, you will always get the same feeling.

So how do we counter this feeling of dread? Well the answer to that question is unfortunately not that flash...You just need to make sure you check, check and check again.

  • Check that all your links are correct
  • Check the merged fields match your database correctly
  • Check the subject line has no spelling mistakes
  • Check any references to dates and times are correct
  • Check the reply-to-field and the from-field are both correct
  • And finally double/triple/quadruple check that you are sending to the right database - yes it's true! This does happen.

Tip: Every single time you send an email broadcast campaign or a test, ask yourself "How many recipients am I expecting this campaign to go to? How Many recipients am I sending to? Do they match up?"

Make all these checks part of your routine as well as making sure you are constantly testing you email across multiple email accounts (ie - hotmail, google, outlook, thunderbird etc).

We can't cure Sendphobia but by following the points mentioned above we can help reduce the symptoms.

Let us know your other tips for testing and preparing your campaigns.

I am a survivor of this affliction and these preventatives work well along with a good bottle of wine (afterwards of course!)

I too get super nervous before our company’s newsletters go out.

I must say though that since the system has a pause button, it gives me a little bit of a fall back, I think, well at least I can pause it if there is some drama.

Sometimes another thing that I do is a put a flag against 20% of the recipients in our database.  I then send to these recipients only.

That way if I pick up anything, there are still 80% of people who will receive the “right” version.
